Dietary Supplement Health
There are many good reasons to take a dietary supplement health product. In today's fast-paced lifestyle we are less likely eat a well balanced diet. As we try to pack more and more activities into our daily lives we are also increasing the stress on our bodies. There are also several other factors which may lead to a deficiency of vitamins in the body including people who smoke, consume alcohol, people who take some medications, and people who are dieting. Prolonged vitamin deficiency can potentially lead to serious health issues.
In this article we're going to talk about vitamins with an emphasis on Vitamin D. A good place to start would be to understand, what is a vitamin ? Vitamins are an organic compound that organisms need, do not produce enough of, and must be consumed for growth and development. Each vitamin is essential for the human body and most deficiencies will have some sort of effect on our bodies. Vitamins should not be confused with dietary minerals such as calcium, fatty acids such as omega-3, or amino acids such as tryptophan. There are thirteen different types of known vitamins that humans need which are vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12, C, D, E, and K. Be sure to note that vitamins effect people differently usually based on age and health and you should do your research on dietary supplemnt health products and follow up with informative reading.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D comes in two forms that are used by the body. Vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. While these chemical compounds are closely related with only a minor difference, the chemicals themselves come from very different sources. Vitamin D2 is primarily obtained from fruits and vegetables while vitamin D3 is obtained from animal products. Vitamin D3 is also the form that human beings are able to manufacture themselves using sunlight.
In fact, because it was found out the human beings can create vitamin D for themselves, many have suggested that vitamin D is not a vitamin at all, but is instead a hormone. Vitamin D is also very different from most indigestible items in that the form that comes from animals is far healthier than the form that comes from plants. The plant form, vitamin D2, is broken down by the body and some of the byproducts are dangerous to the body in large amounts. The other major difference between vitamin D3 and Vitamin D2 is that vitamin D3 has a much longer shelf life so that most vitamin supplements are more effective if they use the form made from animal byproducts.
Vitamin D´s main function is to regulate the levels of calcium found in the blood. Vitamin D accomplishes this by adding calcium to, or taking calcium from our bones. Because of this function, diseases or illnesses that affect vitamin D lead to abnormal bone density and bone growth problems like seen in rickets. Vitamin D is also the controller of phosphorous distribution in the body, and does so in a similar way as it does with calcium.
As vitamin D has a direct relationship with calcium, most deficiencies of vitamin D result in problems with bones and teeth such as osteoporosis. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means it requires fat in the food we eat in order to be absorbed properly. For this reason, 2% milk is recommended over skim milk. Diets that severely limit fat intake can cause severe problems with bone density and calcium regulation in the body.
Vitamin D is found in a large number of foods, but the sources that supply the greatest quantities include milk, cheese, eggs and most meats. Vitamin D is also found in most fruits and vegetables, but in much lower amounts. It is important that if a dietary supplement health product is taken that contains vitamin D, special care should be taken to ensure that the source of the vitamin D is from animal sources, or that the label specifically identifies it as vitamin D3.
As you can see, getting the vitamins that your body needs is important. By taking dietary supplement health products every day you can assist in the process of getting the recommended amount of each vitamin and get on with that busy lifestyle.
